Different Types of Trailers Used in Shipping

In the world today, the transportation of materials and goods from place to place is the order of the day. However, it takes a lot to ensure all shipping occurs safely and with accountability.

It takes specialized and quality equipment to achieve this. In 2015, trucks transported 864 of over 2,000 tons of freight moved. The statistics explain that trailers and trucks or tractors provide the best transportation. You will need to pick one from the many trailer types that are suitable for your cargo.

Choosing can be a challenge. Read on to learn more about the different trailers and the frequently moved commodities using these trailers.

Types of trailers and dimensions used in shipping

Flatbed Trailer

They are the most commonly used type of trailers because of their versatility.

They are open from all sides and do not have a box that covers the load. That makes it easy to load and offload.

It comes in different sizes, from 24 feet to 53 feet, and is usually at the height of 60 inches from the ground. The most common flatbed trailer is the 48 feet.

Since the trailer is open on top, a tarp covers the cargo. .When choosing the tarp, you need to consider the material and the correct safety precautions.

Step Deck Trailers

Step deck trailer design is suitable to transport taller loads without height restrictions. It has two different beds, the upper deck, and the lower deck. The upper deck has a height similar to a flat and occupies 1/4 of the trailer, and the lower deck is a foot and a half lower. And it covers the remaining 3/4.

Step decks like flatbeds may have Conestoga siding or side panels. They have ramps for unloading and are close to the ground, making them safer for unloading by a forklift.

Dry Van Trailer

A dry van is a semi-trailer 48 to 53 feet long. .It is a long rectangular box on wheels and is enclosed hence protecting the shipment from weather elements and other security threats. Some models have a liftgate that makes them usable from ground level, and others can load from the front or the sides. This type of trailer is used with a raised dock for efficient loading and unloading.

The best thing about this trailer is that you can enhance the usable space by making storage cabinets and shelves within the enclosed container.

Removable Gooseneck Trailer

The removable gooseneck trailers carry oversized freight. You can remove the front hitch and turn the trailer into a ramp for loading. The trailer's front end is detachable, hence allowing heavy equipment like a bulldozer to load into the trailer. The feature makes loading and unloading quick and convenient.

Double Drop Trailers

The double drop is specialized to carry heavy or tall loads. They have a unique design with three different elevation levels and sometimes additional axles, allowing them to load various freight types on the trailer.

Refrigerated Trailers

They transport products that need to be kept in cool temperatures. They look like enclosed trailers or dry vans but only with a refrigeration unit to ensure temperature control. The maximum legal height and width are 8 feet and 8.2 feet, respectively.

Lowboy Trailers

They are semi-trailers with a drop deck that allow them to sit near to the ground. The double drop also enables the shipping of huge items. They have a maximum width and height greater than the other types of trailers and allow shipping goods with 14 feet load height.
